What does a pharmacist do to support your ADHD journey?

Hi, I’m Brett, Consultant Pharmacist. I work in community pharmacies and have a special interest in medications used to support neurodivergent individuals. Kristy from Health Connections Training and Consultancy Services asked me to provide a guest blog about how pharmacists can support someone on their ADHD journey.

Have you considered that your pharmacist might be part of your therapeutic support team? Your pharmacist is well placed to support you - here’s three things they can do to help you out on your, or your loved one’s ADHD journey.

Your pharmacist can discuss side effects and concerns without the time pressure of an appointment.

How many times have you made it all the way to the specialist with a laundry list of medication questions, only to panic and go blank when you walk into the appointment? Pharmacists are well-equipped to handle many discussions around ADHD medications, and to answer whatever queries you may have in a more relaxed environment.

Pharmacies can look after scripts for you, so they don’t get lost.

Every pharmacy offers a script-on-file service, where your paper prescriptions can be held in a safe place and filled when you ask for them. Some pharmacies even have apps that let you order and keep track of scripts on your phone!

Pharmacists can talk through medication options if you or your loved one have sensory processing differences.

Not all medications have to be taken as a capsule or tablet! Your pharmacist can advise you on ways to minimise difficulties due to sensory differences. Some pharmacies can even custom-make liquid medications at your doctor’s request.
